Devine three-for takes Scorchers past Strikers in rain-hit game.
Before the heavens opened up to give Perth Scorchers a commanding WBBL victory in Melbourne on Sunday, Sophie Devine’s intervention destroyed Adelaide Strikers.
The seasoned New Zealand all-rounder got 3 for 12, dismissing danger batsman Tahlia McGrath with a peach in the opening ball. After shaping her delivery onto McGrath’s pads, she straightened off the pitch and clipped the top of the middle stump.
Ellie Johnston, the only hitter to find rhythm in her 33 in 21 balls, was run out as the strikers failed to recover and were bowled out for 112.
With Scorchers 55 for 2 in the tenth over, Devine was at the crease when it started to rain.
The game was called off, and Scorchers were proclaimed the winners by nine runs.
Opening partner Katie Mack (24 not out in 30 balls), who capitalised on a botched stumping opportunity from Sophie Ecclestone earlier in her innings, put Scorchers in a winning position when former batsman Beth Mooney was removed on the first ball.
