Starc ready for extra burden as Australia’s senior paceman.
Mitchell Starc, the final member of Australia’s big three, argues that as the senior player in their revamped pace assault, he might assume some additional responsibilities. However, he thinks Brendan Doggett’s form and Scott Boland’s experience will help them in the first Ashes Test in Perth.
Since breaking his finger on Boxing Day in 2022, Starc, 35, has not missed a Test due to injury, making him Australia’s ironman. In Australia’s final Test match in July, he reached his 100th Test and claimed his 400th Test wicket.
Surprisingly, he will be the only Australian quick bowler to have bowled in Perth and will spearhead the assault in the absence of Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins.
Starc is confident both men will handle the big occasion at the start of the series. “I think we’re all pretty clear on what our roles are,” he said on Wednesday.
“Obviously I’ve got a little bit more experience there. Scotty’s been around for a fair while now, so it’s not like I’m telling him what to do. We’ve got Patty in the sheds with us anyway. So yeah, I may take on a little bit of an experienced role, if you like. But we’ve all been around the traps for a while, so it’s just staying together as a group.”
