Edwards on the job at hand after first game as new wolves boss ends in defeat, says he does not have a magic wand.
‘I haven’t got a magic wand’ – Edwards faces impossible job at Wolves.
The home crowd erupted in applause when new manager Rob Edwards was announced, and Wolves briefly felt hopeful again.
But in the end, Crystal Palace was celebrating in a quiet stadium after defeating their opponents in a well-earned victory that highlights how difficult it will be for Edwards to maintain his team in the Premier League.
At this point in a top-flight season, no team has managed to survive with just two points after losing the first twelve games. In 1994–95, Everton managed to remain up, however the Toffees finished with four points after playing the same number of games.
When asked if Wolves will surpass Derby County’s record Premier League low point total of 11 from 2007–08, Edwards became a touch irate on Friday, joking he could tell he was back in the Midlands.
However, that was a valid question.
Wolves are at the bottom and haven’t won in the top division for seven months as December approaches.
They are nine points from the safety line, have lost ten of their twelve games this season, scored just seven goals, and given up 27.
There is little indication that they will be able to make history with one of the greatest escapes, as they are even eight points behind Burnley, who are in 19th place.
Edwards, who was born in Telford, has been waiting for his dream career, but it now appears unattainable.
“We have got players who can produce the big moments. I know we have lost and everyone will be flattened by it, but I have been here five or six days and I haven’t got a magic wand,” said the 42-year-old.
“Emotion and the result will cloud – and take some people’s emotions a certain way. I have to look at it with a bit of clarity.
“They were better in the first half, in the second half we were strong and got punished with the moments and that’s why we are here. It’s a familiar story to the game, there wasn’t loads in it.”
