MLS re-opens investigation into Ernst Tanner, who denies allegations, which initial MLS investigation did not corroborate.
On Wednesday, Major League Soccer declared that it is reopening its investigation into Ernst Tanner, the sports director of the Philadelphia Union. Tanner has been put on administrative leave, according to a statement from the union. The action was taken one day after Tanner’s behaviour was investigated.
After the MLS Players Association filed a complaint with the league in late January, Tanner was previously the subject of an investigation by MLS. The MLSPA listed numerous claimed problems with Tanner in it, including instances of inappropriate physical contact with a staff member and the usage of racist, sexist, and homophobic language.
“I continue to firmly deny these accusations,” Tanner wrote. “My priority is the team, the employees, and the Philadelphia Union community, particularly at this important time when the team has the opportunity to continue to excel in the playoffs. I will cooperate fully with the League’s investigation as I work to clear my good name and reputation.”
“MLS recently concluded an investigation into allegations raised by the MLS Players Association, which the MLSPA noted had not been independently verified,” MLS said in a statement . “Following publication of a Guardian article that included new allegations and potentially new information, MLS will reopen the investigation. MLS maintains an anonymous reporting hotline and encourages anyone with relevant information to come forward.”
“While a recent MLS investigation was unable to corroborate allegations involving Sporting Director Ernst Tanner,” the Union said in their own statement, “MLS has advised the Union that it will be reopening the investigation and the Union continues to cooperate fully. The Union has placed Mr Tanner on administrative leave during the investigation. Throughout this process, our top priority remains the well-being of our players, fans, staff, and community.”
