Sri Lanka mulling plans to move away from Asalanka as their T20 skipper despite no formal and official communication.
Sri Lanka consider moving on from Asalanka as T20I captain.
Two months before a home World Cup, Sri Lanka may fire T20 captain Charith Asalanka. Upul Tharanga, the chief selector, confirmed that the selectors were considering changes but emphasised that no decision had been taken on the captaincy.
Tharanga claims that this reassessment is the result of Asalanka’s subpar performance in T20Is. At least according to team management, Asalanka was sent home ahead of the current tri-series in Pakistan solely because of illness. In any event, he might have captained Sri Lanka in his most recent Twenty20 encounter.
“We have to weigh our best options after this series,” said Tharanga, when asked whether the selectors were considering a change in captaincy. “With a World Cup so close we can’t make a lot of big changes. The selectors, after talking to the coach, will have to make a decision on what’s best for the team.”
Dasun Shanaka, who has previously captained Sri Lanka, was named vice-captain for the tour because, according to Tharanga, the selectors had been considering a change in leadership even prior to the current tour of Pakistan. “That was to give us another option,” Tharanga explained.
He stated that no definitive decision has yet been taken.
“Still Charith is our captain. It’s because of an illness to Charith that we appointed Dasun as our stand-in captain. Charith is still the captain in our plans. We haven’t made a decision to change that. We’ve planned all along for Charith to captain this World Cup. We’ll see what happens. We haven’t made a decision about that yet.
“Charith hasn’t been among the runs in T20s, and because of an illness he was forced to return home, unfortunately.”
