‘He thinks too much’: Amorim defends Yoro over his reaction to being replaced.
Ruben Amorim has claimed Leny Yoro’s conduct when replaced in Manchester United’s 2-1 win at Crystal Palace was inappropriate but feels the 20-year-old “thinks too much” and may improve from the experience.
On Sunday, Yoro gave up the penalty that Jean-Philippe Mateta scored in the 36th minute to give Palace the lead. 54 minutes after United tied the score, the defender was substituted and appeared dejected on the sideline. Mason Mount consoled Yoro, who still seemed unhappy when the squad cheered them on at the end of the game.
Amorim was asked what Mount’s support showed about the side’s culture. “It’s really important,” he said. “I also spoke with him [Yoro] because he thinks too much. He makes a mistake in the game and then he struggles because he’s too young and he wants to do everything so well. He’s growing with games and with setbacks; it’s not easy for him as a young guy.
“He cannot give that [reaction] to the people, the way he came to the bench. He understands that, but he was really frustrated. It shows he cares. He knows it wasn’t his best game, but he did some things well and I showed him that. He’s fit and ready for the next challenge.”
Amorim’s frankness over the defender follows similar honesty about Patrick Dorgu and Diogo Dalot last week, when he stated the former was anxious while receiving the ball and that both train better than they play.
The head coach was again straightforward when mentioning Matheus Cunha, who is available for West Ham’s visit on Thursday after a head injury. Amorim, who is still missing Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko, joked that the Brazilian has been under stress due to social media.
“He was struggling because he was not scoring and because of social media views he was thinking too much about the numbers,” he said. “The influence he has in the team is so important for us but I think Cunha has so much to grow defensively and offensively.”
“What I mean is that I think he [Cunha] feels that he wants to score. He wants to assist. But he is really happy playing the game.
“I think he struggled with these two games out [injured] because he wants to play. Wanting the challenge, the pressure, he is that guy. So it was not good for him to stop playing.
“He watched a lot of players playing well – especially in his position [No 10], so he is not happy. Against West Ham maybe he will have the opportunity to come back and score again or assist.”
