Carrick a close second for interim job as Ole still frontrunner with Fletcher set to take charge for FA Cup game
Carrick running Solskjær close in race to become Manchester United’s interim manager.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still the slim favourite to take over as Manchester United’s temporary manager, but Michael Carrick has moved closer.
The chief executive, Omar Berrada, and the director of football, Jason Wilcox, will not schedule an appointment until they have had in-person interviews. The interviews are scheduled on Thursday and potentially Friday, if necessary, after the current interim manager, Darren Fletcher, led United to a 2-2 draw at Burnley on Wednesday.
After the draw at Turf Moor, Fletcher said he will be in charge again for the FA Cup tie against Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Scot said: “They’ve [the executive] informed me they’d like me to take the team for Sunday. There was a feeling that might have been the case from Monday [when Ruben Amorim was sacked], but we wanted to focus on Burnley. But yeah, I’m tasked with leading the team on Sunday, so all my focus and energy goes to that now.”
It is believed that Carrick would think about serving as Solskjaer’s deputy if Berrada and Wilcox want to name him as caretaker manager once more, after his tenure from December 2018 to March 2019.
The 44-year-old served as Solskjær’s assistant until the Norwegian took over as United’s top player in late March 2019 after a temporary stint. Carrick led the squad for three games following Solskjær’s dismissal in late November 2021, winning two and drawing one.
