Miller given the medical green flag to play in the T20 World Cup as veteran batsman set for sixth T20 World Cup.
Following a groin injury sustained during the SA20, South African batter David Miller has been “medically cleared” to compete in the 2026 T20 World Cup. He was rested from the current series against the West Indies and missed the past two games for the Paarl Royals. He will travel to India with the rest of the team to compete in his sixth T20 World Cup.
Miller is a vital component of the batting lineup and the most seasoned player on South Africa’s team. After Quinton d. Kock, Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, and Dewald Brevis, he is most likely to finish at No. 5. The South African team’s other two specialised hitters are Jason Smith and Tristan Stubbs.
This may be Miller’s final T20 World Cup, even though he hasn’t stated so. He has a white-ball-only deal with Cricket South Africa, and as a farewell, he might be considering the 2027 home ODI World Cup. Miller’s century in the semi-final match against Australia in Kolkata in 2023 was a pivotal moment in South Africa’s previous ODI World Cup campaign. In 2024, he led South Africa to the verge of winning their first T20 World Cup trophy in Barbados, but they lost to India by seven runs after he was caught on the boundary with 16 runs remaining in the final over. He has often stated that he wants to go one step farther, and an injury won’t stop him.
Due to injuries, South Africa has already had to make two changes to the team they named earlier this month. Tony de Zorzi failed not recover from a hamstring rupture, while Donovan Ferreira sustained a broken shoulder at the SA20. Rickelton and Stubbs took their places, respectively. The batsman who was added to the squad as cover for the first Twenty20 International series against the West Indies, Rubin Hermann, would have been the most likely candidate if Miller had been ruled out.
