Adam Griffith named new CA fast bowling coach and will oversee the development and management of Australia’s fast bowlers.
Adam Griffith, a highly experienced coach and former Tasmania fast bowler, is the new national pace bowling coach for Australia.
In an effort to stop the recent wave of injuries and guarantee a more coordinated approach to managing Australia’s quicks, the position was initially posted in October as an Australia-based role to supervise the management of fast bowlers across domestic and international programs.
Undercurrent bowling coach Daniel Vettori, who will continue to travel with the men’s team, and Australia men’s coach Andrew McDonald, Griffith, 46, brings a wealth of experience to the position. Additionally, he will report to Ben Oliver, the head of national teams for CA, with whom he previously collaborated in Western Australia.
Griffith has been the head coach of the Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes before taking over as bowling coach for Victoria. He served as Justin Langer’s senior assistant coach for the Perth Scorchers and Western Australia before accepting the position of head coach in Tasmania. He has also worked with San Francisco Unicorns in the MLC and for Royal Challengers Bangalore [RCB] in the IPL for a long time as a bowling coach. During the 2019 ODI World Cup and bilateral trips in 2012 and 2016, he had brief stints with the Australian men’s squad.
With Pat Cummins, 31, Mitchell Starc, who will shortly turn 35, and Josh Hazlewood, 34, unlikely to continue playing all three formats regularly, Griffith’s promotion comes at a time when Australia’s fast bowling depth is becoming more apparent.
Griffith will oversee a national fast bowler development program from his base at CA’s Centre of Excellence in Brisbane. In addition, he will supervise the training of the country’s fast bowlers and provide coaching support for Australia and the Australia A teams in Vettori’s absence due to franchise obligations. Additionally, he will serve as the coordinator for state bowling programs and the development of fast bowling coaches.
Before relocating to Brisbane to take up his new position, Griffith will finish the domestic season with Victoria, where he is now serving as bowling coach under Chris Rogers. The squad is currently ranked second in the Dean Jones Trophy and the Sheffield Shield.
McDonald was thrilled to secure a coach of Griffith’s calibre for the role. “I’m delighted Adam will bring his extensive experience to Cricket Australia as National Pace Bowling Coach and become an important part of our coaching set up,” he said. “Adam’s expertise across all formats will be invaluable in the preparation of pace bowlers for Australia’s national men’s teams.”
