Australia axe Labuschagne from the ODI squad vs India as Matt Renshaw earns call-up for the 3-match series.
Matt Renshaw, a teammate from Queensland, is expected to make his ODI debut, while Marnus Labuschagne has been left out of the Australia side to play India.
Given that Labuschagne has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings, his exclusion is not shocking. If Matt Short, who is in this squad, hadn’t been sidelined with a strain, he might not have played against South Africa in August. One advantage of his exclusion is that, after opening the season with 160 against Tasmania, he can still advocate for a Test recall in the Sheffield Shield.
Following an outstanding run in List A cricket, which included a century for Australia A against Sri Lanka in Darwin during the winter, Renshaw was called up. He has mostly thrived as a No. 3 and No. 4 in the 50-over game, but he is currently opening in red-ball cricket and may be an outside possibility for the Ashes. He has become a very successful middle-order T20 batsman and has averaged 48.68 with six of his seven career hundreds since November 2021.
He was previously named in the 2022 ODI squad to play Pakistan, but he was not given a chance to play.
The full-strength squad from the players available also includes Mitchell Starc, who hasn’t participated in ODIs since last November. After missing the first game following his call-up to the T20I squad in New Zealand, Alex Carey will skip the first game of the series in Perth in order to play for South Australia in the second round of the Sheffield Shield.
Josh Inglis, a fellow wicketkeeper-batter, is participating in both the ODIs and T20Is after recovering from the calf issue that prevented him from playing in that series. The original T20Is team is only for the first two games of the series; multi-format players will probably be managed for the next three games for the Ashes players.
Glenn Maxwell’s broken wrist sustained prior to the New Zealand series prevents him from playing in the Twenty20 Internationals.
Although he has been included for the ODIs, Cameron Green will not play in the T20Is as he gets ready to play England. He is also expected to play more Shield matches for Western Australia.
Cooper Connolly, an all-rounder, kept his spot in the ODI team after taking 5 for 22 against South Africa in Mackay. With Australia A, he has had a successful tour of India, scoring two half-centuries in the three-match, one-day series.
