Axel Tuanzebe suffers freak injury in “washing up” incident resulting in Ipswich defender to face a lengthy absence.
Axel Tuanzebe faces a long spell on the sideline after a freak injury which almost seen him lose his thumb.
Tuanzebe’s manager, Kieran McKenna, disclosed that Tuanzebe needed surgery due to an unidentified hand ailment that kept him out of the promoted team’s 4-1 loss against West Ham on Saturday. Since then, it has come to light that the right-back suffered severe injuries in a domestic altercation when doing the dishes and cut his hand.
When the glass broke, one of the pieces gave his hand a serious cut. This raised the possibility that his thumb might not survive. A prompt medical response and subsequent surgery prevented that scenario. Although it doesn’t seem probable that the former Manchester United star will be back playing soon.
After the West Ham match, McKenna stated that Tuanzebe would be “out for a while.” This implying that he wouldn’t be eligible to be selected after this international break. The 26-year-old had made a strong start to the season. He was receiving special recognition from Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler following the teams’ goalless draw last month. Any extended absence would be a major setback for Ipswich, who have so far played well in their first seven games but have not yet won.
A further blow to Tuanzebe’s rapidly developing international career is the injury. Despite having received his first three caps for the DRC since June, he was forced to miss this month’s doubleheader Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Tanzania.
Newly-promoted Ipswich are playing in the Premier League for the first time in more than two decades. They will return to Premier League action after the International break against fellow strugglers Everton at Portman Road.
