Bangladesh’s iconic cricket supporter, Tiger Robi, made headlines during the second Test match between India and Bangladesh at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur, in September 2024. Robi, who is well-known for passionately following the Bangladesh team while dressed in a tiger mascot, was rushed to the hospital after an incident during the game, which caused a stir among fans and authorities alike.
At first, the situation appeared quite serious, as reports emerged suggesting Robi had been assaulted by a group of Indian spectators. According to the initial account, Robi claimed he was heckled and even physically attacked by a few individuals in the stands. His comments to media outlets described a tense situation where, after shouting support for Bangladeshi cricketers Najmul Shanto and Mominul Haque, a group of fans began harassing him. Allegedly, they tried to tear his tiger costume and flag before the incident escalated into physical aggression. Videos circulating on social media even showed Robi being escorted out of the stands, visibly distressed and in pain.
However, as the day unfolded, conflicting reports surfaced. After receiving medical treatment, Tiger Robi released a video message that cast doubt on the earlier reports of an assault. In this new statement, he clarified that he was not attacked but had instead fallen ill due to a pre-existing medical condition. He mentioned feeling unwell during the match, likely exacerbated by dehydration, and was subsequently rushed to the hospital. Kanpur police later confirmed Robi’s illness, stating that he had collapsed in the stands due to dehydration, not due to any altercation with fans.
Police authorities further investigated the incident by reviewing CCTV footage, which showed Robi in distress but did not support the claims of a physical assault. Additionally, it was revealed that Robi, who had come to India on a medical visa for tuberculosis treatment, had been undergoing treatment for this illness, which might have contributed to his health issues during the match.
The incident sparked significant attention due to the initial reports of fan violence, but the retraction and further investigation helped quell concerns. While the game itself faced delays due to rain, this off-field event momentarily stole the spotlight. For Robi, this episode turned out to be a health scare rather than an altercation. He expressed his gratitude towards the local authorities and medical personnel who helped him, reassuring fans that he was recovering well after receiving proper care at the hospital.
The Kanpur Test, despite being affected by weather, will now also be remembered for this dramatic yet resolved misunderstanding surrounding one of Bangladesh cricket’s most ardent supporters.
