Barcelona keeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen will undergo surgery after a knee injury suffered against Villarreal.
The German keeper was injured during the first half of the game, and was subsequently stretchered off. Medical examinations have further confirmed “a complete rupture of the patella tendon in the right knee”.
A statement read: “Tests carried out on the first team player, Marc ter Stegen confirm that he has a complete rupture in the patella tendon in his right knee. On Monday afternoon he will undergo a surgical process and once complete a new update will be released.”
The club have not put a timeframe on his return, but it is expected within the club that he is going to be out of action for a very long time.
The German will be replaced by Inaki Pena in the starting lineup.
Talking about the match, Barcelona ran out convincing victors, beating Villarreal by a hefty 5-1 scoreline.
2 goals each by Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha and a goal by Pablo Torre ensured the Blaugrana came away with all 3 points.
They currently are top of the table, winning all 6 of their games so far under new head coach Hansi Flick.
