Barcelona lodge fresh attempt in order to register Olmo as they struggle to comply with league and FFP regulations.
Barcelona lodge new application for new players’ licences for Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor with the Spanish FA (Rfef) on Tuesday.
Hours before the registration deadline of midnight, the announcement was made.
Due to their inability to pay La Liga’s wage ceiling, Barcelona lost their second attempt on Monday to register the players for the rest of the season.
“Barcelona informs that it has applied for a new licence for the players Daniel Olmo and Pau Victor to the Rfef,” the Catalan club said in a statement. “The club would like to deny having requested or receiving any moratorium to any governing body for these inscriptions.”
Olmo, an offensive midfielder, was only registered for the first half of the season after Barcelona paid over €55 million (£45 million) for him in August.
After months of first-team players being sidelined due to long-term injuries, the club was able to allocate a portion of their pay to register Olmo and forward Víctor. In the event of an injury, clubs may temporarily invest up to 80% of a player’s wage on an alternative, according to Article 77 of the La Liga regulations.
Attempts to prolong both registrations have encountered numerous obstacles; La Liga and other legal bodies have rejected Barcelona’s petitions.
Barcelona may be able to achieve the financial requirements to sign Olmo and Victor before the transfer market closes in February, even though they will be free agents after the deadline. The Rfef regulations, however, prohibit a player from being signed by the same team twice in a single season. In the event that the club does not register Olmo, a Spain international, he has the right to unilaterally leave under a condition in his contract.
Subject to La Liga clearance, Barcelona intends to sell VIP box tickets at the Camp Nou stadium in order to raise money. This may bring in over €100 million.
However, Barcelona “have not provided any alternative that, in compliance with La Liga’s economic control regulations, would allow them to register any player as of Jan. 2,” the Spanish league stated later on Tuesday.
The team will play Barbastro in the Copa del Rey on Saturday. They are currently in third place in La Liga, three points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.
