BCB reinstates Nazmul Islam as finance committee chairman as decision comes despite BCB’s promise to remove him.
According to board authorities, the BCB restored director Nazmul Islam as chairman of the finance committee on Monday. After players boycotted BPL and other domestic matches on January 15 in protest of Islam’s derogatory remarks about the nation’s cricket players, Islam was dismissed from this role.
BCB’s disciplinary committee chairman, Faiazur Rahman, said: “Nazmul replied to the showcause notice, to which we gave a positive report, as his explanation was satisfactory. When this report was presented in the board meeting, it was decided to reinstate him as the chairman of the finance committee.”
Later, BCB’s senior vice-president, Shakhawat Hossain, told the Dhaka-based daily Samakal: “The president reinstated Najmul using his power. Because no one wants to take the responsibility of the finance committee. Apart from that, Najmul is an honest person. The president took the decision after considering all aspects.”
After Islam’s remarks on January 14, Bangladeshi cricket players were in a frenzy. Mohammad Mithun, head of the Cricketers Welfare Association Bangladesh (CWAB), demanded a boycott of all cricket. The boycott was implemented in the BPL and Dhaka First Division Cricket League on January 15.
The BCB simply asked Islam to resign as head of the finance committee, despite the players’ demands that he be removed from his position as board director. The players cancelled their boycott later that night after the BCB pledged to expel Islam. But within days, Islam was still spotted watching BPL games in the president’s box of the BCB.
Following accusations of his involvement in corruption during this season’s BPL, Mokhlesur Rahman resigned from his position as chief of the audit committee last week, adding to the BCB’s ongoing problems with directors. Ishtiaque Sadeque, another director, quit his position for private reasons.
