BCCI introduce historic rule in IPL for the first time ever with regards to players’ financial security and remuneration.
With the BCCI imposing a match price of INR 7.5 lakh (about US$ 9000) every game, players in the IPL 2025 are set to earn more money. This implies that teams will compensate players for their appearances throughout the season in addition to the amount in their contracts. This move is put by BCCI secretary Jay Shah on X, also Twitter. He stated that each club will set aside INR 12.60 crore (about $1 million) for match fees this season.
This amount will not be in the franchises’ auction proceeds. The additional incentive as match fee, which comes to INR 90 lakh per match, will be given to the 12 players on the team sheet to split the 12.6 crore. The amount is INR 12.6 crore, multiplying the entire number of matches each side plays in the league phase, 14.
It has come to light that the ten IPL teams have not yet received formal notification of this development. They are currently awaiting the final retention regulations in order to select their squads for the 2025 season. However, during a meeting in July to discuss the retention rules, the franchises were given an assessment of the IPL perspective by club owners and representatives.
The belief is that the IPL informed the franchises about the necessity of providing financial incentives to players. This is due the teams were receiving more salaries than they had previously. The IPL proposed to increase the revenue of players who were signed at the auction for a price close to or equal to their base price and who were then retained at the same price.
Some teams put objections to the IPL suggestion. Concerns about what would happen to bench players was the primary concern. As per their contracts, players were to receive a discretionary fee from the teams’ total auction purse until IPL 2024. This is set by the team’s finish in the previous season.
We referred to this as incremental performance pay. One suggestion to the IPL is to determine the amount put in an incentive pot. The franchise may spend at its discretion to reward its performances, rather than paying a match fee. But it appears that the IPL has adhered to its original schedule.
