With the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) approaching, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a stern directive to state cricket associations hosting matches. The board has stressed the importance of maintaining top-quality pitches and outfields, instructing that these venues should not be used for non-essential activities leading up to the tournament.
The directive comes as part of BCCI’s effort to ensure that the IPL retains its high standards, with fresh and well-maintained playing surfaces for all matches. State associations have been specifically warned against using main pitches and outfields for local tournaments, legends leagues, celebrity matches, or unnecessary practice sessions by IPL franchises. The only exception granted is for Ranji Trophy knockout matches, which may still be played at these venues.
This instruction has been communicated to major state cricket associations, including Mumbai Cricket Association, Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, Karnataka State Cricket Association, Gujarat Cricket Association, Hyderabad Cricket Association, Cricket Association of Bengal, Delhi District Cricket Association, Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association, Punjab Cricket Association, and Rajasthan Cricket Association. Other venues that have previously hosted IPL games, such as Guwahati and Dharamsala, have also been advised to comply with these guidelines.
The BCCI’s concern over pitch conditions stems from previous experiences where overuse of stadiums before the IPL led to deteriorating playing surfaces. With the growing intensity of T20 cricket, ensuring high-quality pitches has become a priority for the board. A well-maintained pitch not only provides a balanced contest between bat and ball but also reduces the risk of injuries to players.
Apart from pitch preservation, the BCCI has also reminded state associations to enhance other aspects of match-day organization, including security, crowd management, and broadcast facilities. The board is keen on avoiding any logistical issues that might impact the smooth conduct of the tournament.
As IPL 2025 nears, franchises are expected to begin their pre-tournament preparations, including practice sessions and intra-squad games. However, with the BCCI’s latest directive in place, teams will have to coordinate with their respective home grounds to ensure that their activities do not affect pitch conditions before the tournament begins.
This move highlights BCCI’s proactive approach in safeguarding the quality of India’s most prestigious T20 league. By enforcing strict pitch maintenance protocols, the board aims to ensure that IPL 2025 delivers the best possible cricketing spectacle for players and fans alike.
