BCCI set to have crisis talks with Rohit and Gambhir with Ashwin’s retirement being a strong topic of discussion.
BCCI set to grill Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma over recent results in Indian cricket.
For the Indian cricket team, 2024 finished on an odd note as a run of bad performances hampered their chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship final. The team’s future was in jeopardy after their home loss to New Zealand and their twin losses in Adelaide and Melbourne.
With one game remaining in the series, it is unlikely that serious conversations will take place, but the BCCI high management is allegedly going to question coach-captain Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma over the recent performance.
There are two reasons why Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket is still a heated issue. First of all, the opening batsman has failed to score enough runs to maintain his position on the squad. Second, the BCCI selection committee is being pressured to expedite the changeover process by Jasprit Bumrah, who has demonstrated his abilities as a captain.
After Rohit removed Shubman Gill from the playing XI at MCG to make room for himself as an opener, many commentators have been talking about his decision to leave the longest format.
“If I was a selector now, it depends on what happens in the second innings, but if he doesn’t make runs… I’d be saying, ‘Rohit, thank you for your service. You’ve been a great player, but we’re going to bring in Jasprit Bumrah as captain for the SCG,'” said Australian batting great Mark Waugh.
Rohit, addressing the press conference after India’s defeat in 4th Test, didn’t seem to have a change of heart over his position in the team.
“I stand where I am standing today,” he said after the MCG loss. “There’s nothing to think about what has happened in the past. Obviously, few results haven’t gone our way. As a captain, yes, that is disappointing.
“Yes, as a batter as well, a lot of things that I am trying to do are not falling into place. But, mentally, it’s disturbing without a doubt. If you have come here, you want to successfully do what you are supposed to. If those things don’t fall in place, that’s a big disappointment.”
