Bentancur expected to be slapped with 6-game ban for his Son comment that was considered to be “racist” in nature.
Bentancur will be given a lengthy ban of at least six matches by the Football Association for making an allegedly racist remark about his teammate Son Heung-min.
The 27-year-old midfielder’s harsh remarks during a June television appearance in Uruguay led to his September charge of “aggravated breach” of FA regulations. When asked to produce a Tottenham shirt that belonged to Son during the interview. Bentancur responded, “Sonny’s or a cousin of Sonny’s? They all look the same, more or less.”
Shortly after the interview was aired, Bentancur apologised to Son in private and publicly on social media.
“Sonny brother! I am sorry for what happened, it was a joke in bad taste,” he wrote on social media. “You know that I love you and would never disrespect you, or hurt you or anyone. I love you brother!”
Bentancur was accused by the FA of using derogatory language and acting in a way that damaged the reputation of the game. The FA further claimed that this was an aggravated infringement because it allegedly included references to nationality, race, or ethnic origin.
Tottenham reportedly questioned the FA’s authority to charge Bentancur. This since the remarks were made while the player was on international duty. But after an independent committee held a closed hearing, the club has finally accepted a guilty finding.
Tottenham was concerned that Bentancur would receive a longer punishment when the FA raised the minimum penalty for using racist remarks to six games in 2019. Spurs will play Manchester City, Fulham, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Southampton, and Liverpool in their next six Premier League games. They will also play Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal next month.
Given that Bentancur has been in 10 of Tottenham’s 11 Premier League games this season. A protracted suspension would be a huge setback for manager Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham declined to comment.
