Bonmatí discharged from hospital following meningitis treatment as midfielder will rejoin teammates on eve of Euro 2025.
After undergoing treatment for viral meningitis, Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmatí was released from the hospital and will soon return to the national squad as they get ready for Euro 2025.
The Ballon d’Or winner watched Spain’s final warm-up play against Japan from her hospital bed on Friday, although she was not present. World Cup champions Spain will play Portugal in Bern on Thursday in their opening match of the competition.
England wished Bonmatí a quick recovery so they could compete in the European Championship. The Barcelona player needs to recover enough to compete in the finals in Switzerland, which begin on Wednesday, according to head coach Sarina Wiegman, whose Lionesses team lost to Spain in the 2023 World Cup final.
Wiegman said: “First of all I hope she’s all right and I hope she recovers well and that she can come back with the team and play, because everyone wants to see players like Bonmati [at the Euros].
“You want the best players from Europe being involved in tournaments, because that’s exciting, that’s what people come to watch – the best players from Europe. So I hope she will be involved and that she will get better soon.”
The England defender Jess Carter echoed Wiegman’s sentiments, adding: “Obviously it’s really sad hearing of anyone becoming unwell, and we all just want her to get better soon and [we] wish her all the best. And then hopefully after recovering, she gets to the tournament and continues to put on the performances that she does.”
In just six days, Spain will play Portugal in the opening match of their Euro 2025 campaign on July 3. After that, they play Italy on July 11 and Belgium on July 7.
