Boro allow Rob Edwards to hold talks over potential Wolves job as he was stood down from the Birmingham match.
Boro give Rob Edwards permission to hold talks over Wolves job.
A deal for the Boro head coach is anticipated to be finalised within the next 48 hours after Middlesbrough agreed to allow Rob Edwards to speak with Wolves about their managerial position.
The 42-year-old Edwards is expected to return to Molineux after being relieved of his duties as manager of Saturday’s home game against Birmingham.
“Middlesbrough Football Club have, subject to the completion of an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, given head coach Rob Edwards permission to speak to Wolves,” confirmed a Boro statement on Saturday afternoon.
“We initially rejected an approach from Wolves on the basis that Rob signed a three-year contract with MFC less than six months ago. Following discussions with Rob we were disappointed to learn that he wanted to speak with Wolves regarding their head coach vacancy. We have now agreed terms with Wolves, subject to completion of the relevant paperwork.”
Less than a day after Boro turned down Wolves’ formal approach on Thursday, the Championship team called off Edwards’ pre-game news conference because he skipped training on Friday. Instead, Adi Viveash and Harry Watling, Edwards’ assistants, took his place.
Edwards’ status has been shrouded by uncertainty due to the Premier League club’s persistent interest, and Boro removed Edwards from the dugout on Friday afternoon following talks with Boro’s management, including owner Steve Gibson.
After the 3-0 loss at Fulham, which was the team’s eighth league loss in the top flight this season, Wolves selected Edwards to replace Võor Pereira, who was fired after earning only two points from ten games.
