India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been declared fit and is set to feature in the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, starting July 23. The confirmation from the Indian camp brings relief and optimism, especially with the series delicately poised at 2–1 in England’s favor. Bumrah’s inclusion is seen as a strategic decision by the team management, aimed at mounting a strong comeback and leveling the five-match series before the final Test at The Oval.
There had been growing speculation over Bumrah’s workload, given the demands of back-to-back Tests. After playing the first and third Tests, he was rested for the second in Birmingham as part of a carefully designed rotation policy to manage his fitness and longevity. During his break, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep filled the void commendably, but the loss at Lord’s underscored the need for Bumrah’s leadership and incisive pace.
The team’s assistant coach confirmed that Bumrah is match-ready and available for selection, adding that the stakes in the fourth Test justify fielding their best lineup. The coaching staff acknowledged that while they are mindful of the fast bowler’s workload, the importance of the upcoming match outweighed the concerns. The Manchester Test is now being treated as a virtual must-win for India.
Bumrah has been in phenomenal form during the series, picking up 12 wickets in just two appearances. His ability to swing the ball at high pace, exploit reverse swing, and execute toe-crushing yorkers gives India an edge, particularly on English surfaces where conditions tend to favor seamers. His return strengthens an already potent Indian pace attack that includes Siraj, who currently leads the series with 13 wickets, along with the energetic Akash Deep and the experienced Shardul Thakur.
India’s record at Old Trafford, however, does not inspire much confidence. In nine Tests played at the venue, India has never won—losing four and drawing five. Bumrah’s presence, however, could change that narrative. The surface in Manchester is expected to offer bounce and carry, conditions well-suited to Bumrah’s skillset.
The team management is likely to make a final decision on the playing XI after assessing the pitch and weather conditions. But insiders have indicated that unless there is a last-minute concern, Bumrah will definitely play. With the series on the line, India needs its senior-most pacer not just for his bowling impact but also for his experience in leading the attack under pressure.
The decision to play Bumrah also reflects the team’s intent. By fielding their strongest pace battery, India is signaling that they’re ready to take the fight to England in conditions that have historically been challenging. As the countdown begins for the crucial fourth Test, all eyes will be on Bumrah, whose performance could very well determine the course of this tightly contested series.
