Cameron Green to play for Gloucestershire after “mystery donation” from one of the undisclosed members of the County.
Cameron Green to play 5 games for Gloucestershire in a deal made possible by a “significant donation” from one of the club’s members.
Green was lining up a stay in county cricket and hopes to return from a back stress fracture before the Sheffield Shield season ends. He will play five games for Gloucestershire in the Championship’s second level between April 18 and May 26, the team confirmed on Friday.
Green’s spell will allow him to play competitively before Australia and South Africa meet one other in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June. Due to competition for spots in the middle order following the recent success of Josh Inglis and Beau Webster in their early Test careers, he will only be available as a specialist hitter rather than an all-rounder.
With a £1.19 million loss in their most recent financial statements, Gloucestershire’s finances have been in dire straits in recent years. However, according to chair Peter Matthews, one of the club’s around 2,000 members had contributed a certain amount of money, allowing them to pay Green’s salary without going over their 2025 playing budget.
“We are delighted to welcome Cameron to Gloucestershire,” Matthews said. “This deal would not have been possible without a significant donation from a member of the club, and we are incredibly grateful for his generosity, which has enabled us to do this deal without going over the playing budget.”
Mark Alleyne, Gloucestershire’s coach, said: “Cameron Green’s ability is unquestionable… He usually operates in a key position for the best Test team in the world at the moment and having that pedigree in our camp is amazing for the players alongside him. We have serious ambitions in all formats in 2025 and Cameron’s signing will reinforce this sentiment.”
