Cleverley named Plymouth manager after signing a 3-year deal following his sacking from Watford this summer.
Tom Cleverley, a former Watford manager, has been named head coach of Plymouth Argyle.
In a three-year deal, the 35-year-old replaces Miron Muslic, who departed the team last month to take over at Schalke in Germany.
Cleverley joins an Argyle team that was relegated from the Championship after two years and is making a comeback to League One this season.
Before taking over as head coach in March 2024, the former Manchester United and Everton midfielder played the majority of his playing career at Watford.
Following a dismal second half of the season in which Watford fell to 14th place, Cleverley was fired by the Hornets in May after missing out on the playoffs.
Since Javi Gracia’s rule from January 2018 to September 2019, no manager at Vicarage Road has held the position for as long as he did, 14 months.
Cleverley oversaw 60 games in total, winning 20, drawing 14, and losing 26.
“Ever since Miron’s departure and knowing Tom was available, we identified him straight away as the perfect person to be our next head coach and targeted him immediately,” chairman Simon Hallett told the club website., external
“When we spoke to him he was completely aligned with the vision and ambitions of the club and it was clear throughout that Tom was the right fit for us.
“He is young, passionate and did a great job at Watford. We are thrilled to bring him to Argyle and look forward to seeing the impact he has on the talented squad at his disposal.”
Although several of the coaches Muslic selected are still listed on the Argyle website as being on the club’s staff, discussions are still going on over who Cleverley will appoint to his backroom staff.
Cleverley may decide to reunite with his Watford assistant, Damon Lathrope, who has already left the team and played for Plymouth’s Devon rivals Torquay United for more than five years in two stints.
