Conor Gallagher promises special moments after Spurs signing following his £34.6m transfer from Atletico Madrid.
After completing a £34.6 million signing from Atletico Madrid, Conor Gallagher has promised to deliver “special moments” to Tottenham. After losing Rodrigo Bentancur to a hamstring injury at Bournemouth last Wednesday, Spurs moved swiftly to get a midfield player they have long liked, defeating Aston Villa in the process. Since then, Bentancur has had surgery.
At the end of the 2023–24 season, Gallagher was considered by Tottenham, but he left Chelsea for Atlético for £34 million. The home crowd unfurled a banner depicting Gallagher prior to Chelsea vs. Spurs’ Premier League match at Stamford Bridge in May 2024. The caption for their academy product was, “Chelsea since birth.” Don’t sell him to Tottenham, was the obvious message.
After a disappointing first half of the season at Atlético, when he started just four times in La Liga, Gallagher is now keen to sign with Spurs on a contract that will last until 2031 and return to the Premier League.
Prior to this summer’s World Cup, the 25-year-old is eager to rekindle his aspirations for England. He last appeared for Thomas Tuchel’s team in the friendly loss to Senegal in June of last year. He has 22 caps and was a member of the squad for the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. In Saturday’s home match against West Ham, Gallagher might make his Spurs debut.
“I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club,” Gallagher said. “I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the club felt the same. It was very easy. It happened very quickly and I’m ready to get on the pitch. I know how great the fans are, I’m really happy to be a part of it here and want to create special moments and memories together.”
Thomas Frank, the Spurs manager, said: “Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad. He is still young so has plenty of room for improvement but also has huge experience across the Premier League, La Liga and with the England national team.
“Conor has captained teams so will bring leadership, maturity, character and personality to our dressing room, while his running power, pressing ability and eye for goal will strengthen us in a key area of the pitch.”
