CPS handed file of Premier League player accused of rape with unnamed 31-year-old player out on extended bail.
CPS has been handed a “full file” of evidence on a Premier League footballer accused of rape by The Metropolitan police.
The athlete, who is not allowed to be identified for legal reasons, was initially detained in July 2022 on suspicion of rape at a Barnet house. While in detention, he was arrested again after it was claimed that another lady had raped him twice in April and June 2021.
He was questioned again in November after being released on bond, which has been renewed several times since then. In the meantime, the police indicated that they will not be taking any further action over the June 2021 event due to a technicality.
“Met officers are investigating following a number of reports of alleged sexual offences between 2021 and 2023,” said a spokesperson for the Met. “A full file has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service [CPS] and detectives continue to work with prosecutors. Those who have come forward to police continue to receive support from Met officers.”
Given that four women formally accused the athlete to the police last year, the 2023 sexual offences investigation indicates that more victims have come forward with charges against the player.
Despite the ongoing inquiry, the 31-year-old player has kept playing for his team. In July 2022, The Guardian revealed that the club had known about the accusations since the autumn of 2021.
