The UT Cricket Association (UTCA) and Panjab University (PU) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cricket infrastructure, coaching programs, and events in Chandigarh. The partnership aims to provide aspiring cricketers with world-class facilities while promoting academic and professional growth in the sport.
The MoU, signed recently by UTCA Secretary Devender Sharma and PU Registrar Prof. Y.P. Verma, focuses on upgrading the university cricket ground and training facilities. Planned improvements include construction of modern changing rooms, better storage areas, installation of irrigation systems for consistent playing surfaces, enhanced lighting, and camera stands to support professional-level matches. The upgrades are expected to create a conducive environment for both training and competitive cricket at domestic and university levels.
Under the agreement, UTCA will take responsibility for maintaining playing pitches, training nets, and outfields, ensuring consistent quality and year-round usability. The partnership also envisions jointly hosting local, state, and national tournaments, which will allow students and emerging cricketers to gain exposure to competitive cricket and develop under professional standards.
Beyond infrastructure, the collaboration emphasizes academic and coaching programs. Both organizations will offer cricket coaching certifications, fitness training, and sports management modules. Coaches, physiotherapists, and sports scientists from UTCA and PU will work together to provide comprehensive support to players, focusing on skill development, injury prevention, and performance optimization. These programs aim to groom well-rounded athletes capable of competing at higher levels, including domestic leagues and potential international opportunities.
Speaking about the partnership, UTCA President Sanjay Tandon highlighted its potential to elevate the standard of cricket in Chandigarh. He noted that improved facilities and structured coaching would help nurture local talent and could position the city as a hub for hosting domestic and international cricket events in the future.
Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig emphasized that the initiative aligns with the university’s vision of holistic student development. She pointed out that combining high-quality infrastructure with structured academic and professional training can create opportunities for students to pursue careers in sports, coaching, and sports management, in addition to enhancing their cricketing skills.
The signing ceremony saw the presence of senior officials from both UTCA and PU, including administrators, faculty members, and university cricket coaches, reflecting a shared commitment to the growth of cricket in the region. Their joint efforts underscore the focus on long-term development, ensuring that students and young cricketers receive both practical training and academic knowledge to excel in the sport.
This partnership marks a major step forward for cricket in Chandigarh. By combining professional-grade facilities, structured coaching programs, and academic initiatives, UTCA and Panjab University aim to build a robust cricketing ecosystem. The collaboration promises to nurture talent, enhance performance, and provide players with opportunities to compete at higher levels, ultimately contributing to the growth and popularity of cricket in the region.
