[Saba Sports News] The ODI World Cup 2023 is down to its business end. India, South Africa and Australia have already laid their claim on three semi-final spots, leaving one place ajar.
Up until Thursday, New Zealand, Pakistan and Afghanistan had equal chances of clinching the vacant semi-finale berth. However, as the Black Caps decimated Sri Lanka recently by five wickets, chasing the 172-run target in just 23.2 overs, it is more or less confirmed that they are the fourth semi-finalists.
Still, cricket is a game of uncertainties. And we are not going to leave you with a scratched head, knowing many of you still are hoping that Pakistan somehow make the semis. It can happen. Let me explain you how:
Scenario 1: Pakistan have a league match left against England. If they bat first, they would have to ensure they win the game by 287 runs. Impossible, right?
Scenario 2: Let’s say Pakistan bowl first. If they want to beat New Zealand’s NRR, the Men in Green would be required to complete the run-chase in 16 balls. It’s even more tougher than scenario 1 and it’s fair to say that if Pakistan bowl first, it’s all over for them apropos to their chances of qualifying for the knockouts.
For all practical purposes, the World Cup 2023 will not witness an Indo-Pak semi-final and it will be repeat of the 2019 classic between India and New Zealand. The other semi-final match is also confirmed to take place between Australia and South Africa.
