As the IPL 2026 mini-auction approaches, two major franchises, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), are reportedly exploring strategic player acquisitions to bolster their squads. MI is interested in re-signing wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, while CSK is looking to secure all-rounder Washington Sundar as a potential replacement for the retired Ravichandran Ashwin.
Mumbai Indians’ Interest in Ishan Kishan
According to recent reports, MI has approached Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) regarding a potential trade for Ishan Kishan. Despite initial discussions, no deal has been finalized yet. Kishan, who played for MI in previous seasons, was acquired by SRH for ₹11.25 crore at the IPL 2025 auction. However, his performance with SRH was underwhelming, scoring 133 runs in 11 innings at an average of 15.40 and a strike rate of 112.40. Notably, he achieved his highest scores of 106* and 94 in two innings, indicating potential that MI may be keen to tap into.
Chennai Super Kings Target Washington Sundar
Meanwhile, CSK is reportedly in talks with Gujarat Titans (GT) to acquire Washington Sundar in an all-cash trade. Sundar, who played for GT in the 2025 season, participated in six matches, taking two wickets in 10 overs and scoring 133 runs at a strike rate of 166.25. GT is said to have agreed to release Sundar without imposing any conditions. CSK views Sundar as a suitable replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin, who announced his retirement from the IPL following a challenging season with CSK.
Strategic Implications for Both Franchises
For MI, re-signing Ishan Kishan could provide a long-term solution to their wicketkeeping and opening slot challenges. Kishan’s previous tenure with MI saw him as a promising talent, and the franchise may believe in his potential to deliver under familiar conditions.
CSK interest in Washington Sundar aligns with their strategy to rejuvenate the squad with younger talent. Sundar’s all-round capabilities and familiarity with Tamil Nadu’s cricketing culture make him a fitting candidate to fill Ashwin’s shoes, both on and off the field.
As both franchises navigate the trade window, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether these potential acquisitions materialize, shaping the dynamics of IPL 2026.
