Cummins out of Brisbane Test against England as Australia name unchanged 14.
The unaltered Australia team for the day-night Test match against England at the Gabba does not feature Pat Cummins.
Josh Inglis, Michael Neser, and Beau Webster are among the 14 players that were on duty in Perth but were left out of the starting lineup by the selectors.
After bowling to stand-in captain Steven Smith after a lengthy training session at the SCG on Friday, Cummins will head to Brisbane to complete his bowling comeback.
He is scheduled to bowl on Monday. Although there is nothing stopping the selectors from including him in the team closer to the match, it is more likely that he will return for the third Test in Adelaide, giving him two more weeks to be ready. Cummins hasn’t bowled on consecutive days throughout his rehabilitation.
Cummins had given himself “half a chance” of being ready for Brisbane and had bowled with the pink ball since returning to Sydney following the two-day finale, he told broadcasters during the Perth Test.
“It looked like a player that was nearing the completion of his rehabilitation,” coach Andrew McDonald said after Perth. “The intensity was there, the ball speed was there. There’s a lot of positives, but now it’s just really building that resilience within the soft tissue and making sure that we’re not putting him in harm’s way in terms of accelerating it too much.”
Usman Khawaja, who was unable to start the batting in either innings due to back spasms in Perth, has been kept in the squad. After hitting 123 off 83 balls during Australia’s chase, Travis Head’s effectiveness in the role has sparked discussion over whether it should be considered a permanent transfer.
Brendan Doggett, who took five wickets in Perth, will probably continue to play with Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland in Cummins’ absence.
