Daniel Levy eased aside at Tottenham as club seek new path and investment.
After nearly 25 years in charge, Daniel Levy stepped down as Tottenham’s chair, leaving a legacy that can best be described as mixed. With Peter Charrington joining the board in March and taking on the newly established position of nonexecutive chair, the Lewis family, the club’s owners, has assembled a new leadership team.
One of their main objectives will be to draw in new investment, and Vinai Venkatesham, who was appointed CEO in April, will gain even more clout. It is acknowledged that Spurs must pursue their many corporate expansion initiatives in order to achieve their ultimate goal of on-field success.
A source close to the Lewis family said: “Generations of the family support this special football club and they want what the fans want – more wins more often. This is why you have seen recent changes, new leadership and a fresh approach. In Vinai, Thomas [Frank, the new manager] and Peter Charrington, they believe they are backing the right team to deliver on this. This is a new era.”
The fans have been critical of Levy since he succeeded Alan Sugar as chairman in February 2001. They have protested and called for his resignation, accusing him of prioritising money over glory. Although the squad won the Europa League last season, adding to their 2008 League Cup success, they have been dissatisfied by the lack of hardware during his tenure. Levy fired 13 managers in an attempt to find the winning recipe, excluding carers.
Levy’s contributions to Spurs are undeniable, beginning with the stunning new stadium and cutting-edge training facility. He has made a name for himself among the financial elite thanks to his keen business sense. With an annual turnover of £512 million, the club was ranked ninth in the world of football by Deloitte’s most current Money League, which was released for 2023–2024. They weren’t competing in Europe at the time of this. Furthermore, after finishing in 17th place the previous season, they have emerged as a much more reliable force in the league.
