Danny Rohl leaves Sheffield Wednesday as club faces increasing existential crisis and survival problems off late.
Danny Rohl, the manager of Sheffield Wednesday, departed the Championship team in trouble by mutual consent.
In a hectic summer, the 36-year-old’s exit comes less than two weeks before the season begins.
Due to financial difficulties, including players receiving late payments in May and June, the Owls are subject to several embargoes, and owner Dejphon Chansiri is considering selling the team.
When Rohl failed to come for preseason training last month, it appeared as though he was going to depart, but he returned in early July.
“A very special time is coming to an end and I am incredibly grateful for the experiences we shared over 21 unforgettable months together,” Rohl posted on Instagram., external
“This summer has been difficult and, in the end, the club and I came to the mutual decision to part ways.
“I understand the different thoughts and reactions to everything that has been going on during these past few months.
“I am extremely grateful to have had this opportunity. Even during the difficult moments and setbacks, I have always continued to feel the support from everyone.”
When the German took over at Hillsborough in October 2023, the team had experienced its worst-ever season opener. He guided them to a remarkable run of play that kept them from being relegated back to League One.
Then, as their play-off push waned, Wednesday finished 12th in 2024–25, winning only one of their last nine games.
Before the off-field problems took centre stage, Rohl hinted that his time with the team might be coming to an end following the last game of the previous season at Watford.
