[Saba Sports News] In a recent interview with reporters following a practice session, Los Angeles Lakers’ head coach, Darvin Ham, surprised everyone with his unconventional plan for Anthony Davis this season. Ham is advocating for Davis to attempt six three-pointers per game.
“I’ve asked him to aim for six three-point attempts per game, with at least three in each half,” stated Ham, as reported by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “I wouldn’t suggest this if I didn’t believe he could do it.”
This plan is quite unexpected, considering Davis only averaged 1.3 three-point attempts per game last season. Davis’s previous career-high in this category was 3.5 three-point attempts per game during the 2019-20 season.
Ham’s goal for Davis to nearly double that figure is made even more intriguing by the fact that Davis has struggled with three-point shooting, with a disappointing 23.8 percent accuracy over the past three years and a career percentage of just under 30 percent (29.96 percent). Encouraging a player with Davis’s shooting efficiency to drastically increase his three-point attempts in his 12th NBA season could potentially harm the Lakers’ offensive performance.
It’s already known that Davis has requested a significant change in his role this season. However, Ham’s plan to transform Davis into a stretch 4 who frequently attempts threes may challenge conventional basketball wisdom.
