David on the right track despite setback in his recovery with Mahli Beardman and Edwards called up for the Pak series.
While Australia’s selectors are finalising a plan for Pat Cummins to enter the competition late, Tim David has experienced a slight setback in his recuperation from a hamstring injury before to the T20 World Cup but is still on track to compete.
Along with Glenn Maxwell and Nathan Ellis, David, Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood are five of Australia’s T20 World Cup players who will not play in the three-match series against Pakistan that begins at the end of the month.
Following their inclusion in the three Twenty20 Internationals in Lahore, Jack Edwards and Mahli Beardman may make their international debuts.
After missing the entire Ashes series due to hamstring and Achilles issues, Hazlewood stated that he was making good progress for the World Cup. He hopes to make a comeback in Australia’s warm-up match in Sri Lanka, which is also anticipated to be against Pakistan.
“TD [David] had a very minor setback, I think last week, so didn’t quite get through a running session that he was hoping to, but has since been cleared of any damage,” chair of selections George Bailey said. “It was just, I think, on the back of a heavy week. So he’s still tracking for the start of the tournament. Josh is in the same boat and Pat’s a little bit different … he’ll probably join that World Cup group a little bit later in the tournament, around game three or four.”
The plan to give Cummins extra time following the lumbar stress injury which limited him to one Test against England was previously flagged earlier this month. “If we can, absolutely, that’s the plan,” Bailey said on Monday. “Clearly, if something moves and we’re forced to cover that, we will, but, yes, hopefully all things being equal, that’ll be how that one plays out.”
After outstanding BBL seasons for the Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers, respectively, Beardman, the 20-year-old pace bowler, and Edwards, an all-rounder, were picked. Edwards (15 wickets at 18.33) was briefly included in the ODI group, while Beardman (8 wickets at 30.25) was a member of the T20I team against India earlier this season.
The tour to Pakistan will include ten matches from Australia’s T20 World Cup. Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Mitch Owen, Josh Phillippe, and Matt Renshaw join Beardman and Edwards in the extended 17-player roster, which fills in for players who would miss the series’ first game after playing in the BBL final.
