The fact that Virat Kohli chose to skip the T20Is and
ODIs against South Africa may signal an intriguing change in his career. At the
age of 35, Kohli has won the ICC trophy twice, holds the distinction of being
India’s most successful Test captain ever, and has set every single ODI batting
record. Although winning the World Cup would have been the cherry on top, Kohli
had to learn the hard way that there are no truly happy endings. He is
undoubtedly capable of continuing, but it is still unclear for how long.
Having said that, Kohli’s former colleague at Royal
Challengers Bangalore, AB de Villiers, is the person who can offer the closest
glimpse into the thoughts of the player. De Villiers sincerely hopes that Kohli
can continue playing Tests and ODIs for a little while longer, as the two have
spent many seasons playing together and developing a special brotherhood. De
Villiers, the SA20’s brand ambassador, had a lighthearted conversation with
Hindustan Times in which he discussed a number of subjects, such as India’s
impending tour of South Africa, his assessment of the Proteas’ unforgettable
World Cup 2023 campaign, and what lies ahead for Kohli.
Speaking on Kohli after it was revealed that he will
skip the white ball leg of the tour, ABD said, “I hope he continues to play
ODIs and Tests. I’m sure he has got a plan in place. It’s very reasonable and
normal for him to be tired, to feel like it’s time for him to unfold that final
chapter in a way. I don’t exactly know how long he will play for but I would
like it to be for as long as possible. He’s been incredible to watch and we all
want to see a little bit more of him. The South Africa series is important to
him, and he might play a few, rest and sit out a few and find a way to manage
himself leading up to the end of his career.
At a very early stage, Virat found a way to master his
own game, understand what works for him and he has taken that into the
highest-pressure moments. It’s a privilege to have shared the dressing room
with him, partnerships with him and some incredible moments with him. He’s a
fantastic player and long may that continue. Hopefully, that career has got a
few more years in it.
