Disgruntled United star makes huge future claim after being left out of the side for the Manchester Derby on Sunday.
Disgruntled United star Marcus Rashford has made a huge announcement about his Manchester United future.
Marcus Rashford’s almost 20-year association with Manchester United looks set to come to an end.
“I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps.” This is what the England forward had to say. The 27-year-old was dropped from the side for the Manchester Derby on Sunday.
The new head coach, Ruben Amorim, and United’s management will be pleased to let Rashford go in January because the 27-year-old has struggled for form over the last two seasons. The forward’s £365,000 weekly salary may make it tough for a suitor to afford him, therefore United may have to accept below-market value to facilitate his departure, but they are still open to hearing proposals for him.
“If I know that a situation is already bad I’m not going to make it worse,” Rashford told the journalist Henry Winter. “I’ve seen how other players have left in the past and I don’t want to be that person. When I leave I’ll make a statement and it will be from me.”
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United’s minority owner, wants to be more brutal than past administrations, and Rashford has contributed to the team’s current woes. After joining the squad at the age of seven, he made his first-team debut at the age of eighteen, scoring twice in a Europa League victory over Midtjylland to start his ascent to stardom. To date, he has made 426 appearances and scored 138 goals.
Rashford’s play has drastically deteriorated since he scored 17 Premier League goals in 2022–2023. On multiple occasions, former head coach Erik ten Hag had to ban him for off-field misconduct.
Rashford’s poor play last season led to his exclusion from the England squad for the European Championship by Gareth Southgate, and he hasn’t yet regained the form that has earned him 60 caps, raising the possibility that he and United need a new beginning.
Speaking of being dropped, Rashford said: “It’s disheartening to be left out of a derby, but it’s happened, we won the game so let’s move on. It’s disappointing but I’m also someone as I’ve got older I can deal with setbacks. What am I going to do about it? Sit there and cry about it. Or do my best the next time I’m available.”
“I’m halfway through my career,” Rashford said. “I don’t expect my peak to be now. I’ve had nine years so far in the Premier League. It has taught me a lot. It’s helped me grow as a player and a person. So I don’t have any regrets from the last nine years. I won’t have any regrets going forward because I take things day by day and sometimes bad things happen, sometimes good things happen. I just try and keep a fine balance.” Asked if the best is yet to come? “100%. That’s my mentality.”
