Doug Bracewell announces retirement from all cricket having last played cricket for New Zealand way back in 2023.
Doug Bracewell retires from all forms of cricket.
Doug Bracewell, an all-rounder from New Zealand, has declared his retirement from cricket. The 35-year-old Bracewell last played in a Test match for New Zealand in 2023.
Bracewell’s decision was influenced by a recurrent rib injury that has prevented him from playing for Central Districts this season.
Between 2011 and 2023, Bracewell participated in 28 Test matches, 21 ODIs, and 20 T20Is. His career’s high point occurred in just his third Test match, in Hobart in December 2011, when he led New Zealand to their first Test victory in Australia in 26 years with match statistics of 9 for 60. Since then, it has been their only victory in Australia.
Bracewell took 74 wickets at an average of 38.82 in 28 Test matches thanks to his agile fast-medium. In all of his white-ball appearances for New Zealand, he also claimed 46 wickets.
Bracewell hails from a prominent cricket family in New Zealand. His uncles Douglas and Mark played first-class cricket, and his father Brendon and uncle John also played Test cricket. John also enjoyed several stints as a New Zealand coach. Alongside his cousin Michael, who will captain New Zealand in the ODIs during the tour of India next month and an Under-19 World Cup in 2010, Bracewell participated in two ODIs and a Test.
“It’s been a proud part of my life, and something I aspired to as a young cricketer,” Bracewell said in a Central Districts statement. “I will always be grateful for the opportunities I have had through cricket, and the chance to play for my country, as well as for Central Districts, throughout my domestic career. It’s a privilege to play first-class and international cricket, and I’m grateful to have played and enjoyed the game for as long as I have.”
In New Zealand’s first-class cricket, Bracewell holds the unique distinction of having amassed over 4000 runs and taken over 400 wickets. Offspinner Jeetan Patel is another player who has accomplished this feat. Bracewell scored 4505 runs at 25.45, including three hundreds, while taking 437 wickets at 31.08 in 137 first-class matches.
