England docked WTC points and fined for slow over rate at Lord’s.
Due to their slow overrate in the narrow 22-run victory over India in the third Test at Lord’s, England has been fined two World Test Championship (WTC) points. As a result, England’s standing on the WTC points table has dropped from 24 to 22 points, and their percentage points have decreased from 66.67% to 61.11%, dropping them from second to third place, behind Sri Lanka and Australia.
For failing to meet the time limit for overrates, England was further fined 10% of their match fees.
After time allowances are taken into account, a team is docked one point for each over short in accordance with WTC playing conditions Article 16.11.2.
Since England captain Ben Stokes entered a guilty plea to the crime, a formal hearing was not required.
A high-octane and exciting match, the third Test saw England win to take a 2-1 lead in the series. It featured intense battles where players frequently faced off against one another, a surge in intensity towards the end of the day, individual brilliance that included one of Jofra Archer’s fastest Test spells, centuries from Joe Root and KL Rahul, and a five-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah.
Soon after the teams faced off with equal first-inning scores of 387, which lowered the Test to a second-innings contest, the level of intensity increased.
Ravindra Jadeja formed crucial lower-order partnerships with Nitish Kumar Reddy, Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj after India was ahead 193 to win. Shoaib Bashir, who had a broken finger on his left hand, then dramatically dismissed Siraj to start England’s celebrations while breaking Indian hearts.
The fourth Test, which starts on July 23 at Old Trafford, will now feature Liam Dawson in lieu of Bashir, who has been ruled out of the series.
