[Saba Sports News] Sri Lanka sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe has adopted an “Out with the Old and In with the New” approach by sacking all the members of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board following the heartbreaking 302-run defeat against India in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Thursday at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
The sports minister’s strong reaction to the shocking defeat led to him publicly demanding the entire board’s resignation, claiming that SLC officials lacked the necessary moral and ethical authority to remain in their roles. Previously, he had strongly condemned the board, labeling them as “traitorous and corrupt.”
Mohan de Silva, who served as the secretary of the SLC and was also the second most powerful person on the board, was the first to resign after Roshan’s request. The immense public outcry from passionate Sri Lankan cricket fans, who assembled in protest outside the organization’s headquarters further intensified the pressure.
Furthermore, Ranasinghe displayed the commitment to reform and development by establishing a seven-member interim committee, which notably includes three retired judges, one of whom is a retired Supreme Court Judge.
The statement released by Ranasinghe’s office reads, “Sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe has formed an interim committee for Sri Lanka Cricket.”
The committee will be headed on an interim basis by former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga, who led his team to the World Cup glory for the first time in history in 1996.
