Fenerbahce part ways with Mourinho after UCL failure, club say they ‘mutually agreed to terminate’ contract.
José Mourinho parts company with Fenerbahce after Champions League exit.
Fenerbahce announced on Friday that José Mourinho’s contract has been terminated, ending the Portuguese coach’s time in Istanbul.
Mourinho, 62, left Roma to take up Fenerbahce in July 2024. The Istanbul team, who are vying for their first Turkish Super Lig championship since 2014, stated in a statement that they have “mutually agreed to terminate” their contract with Mourinho.
When the former manager of Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United arrived in Istanbul at the beginning of last summer, he was met by thousands of supporters, which increased hopes that Galatasaray’s previous supremacy would end.
Fenerbahce’s erratic season debut and early European setbacks, however, put pressure on his status. This week, the team lost 1-0 on aggregate to Benfica in the Champions League playoffs, relegating them to the Europa League.
