Florian Wirtz on Liverpool’s radar for summer transfer as Manchester City withdraw from the race for his services.
Liverpool have made initial contact with Bayer Leverkusen over a move for attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz.
As the Premier League winners start making plans for the upcoming campaign, the Germany playmaker is becoming Arne Slot’s top goal.
During those talks, Liverpool expressed their interest in signing 22-year-old Wirtz, and they are expected to sign Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.
Although formal talks have not yet begun, it is anticipated that they will eventually take place for a player who is valued at over £120 million by the Bundesliga team.
It is unclear if Liverpool would be prepared to spend such a sum, which would surpass the £107 million British transfer record Chelsea and Benfica agreed upon for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Although there are rumours in Germany that Wirtz would rather transfer to Anfield than Bayern Munich, Liverpool has been encouraged that he is eager to join them.
Liverpool and Bayern are now the front-runners to recruit Wirtz after Manchester City was eliminated from the running earlier this week, according to BBC Sport.
Slot, the manager of Liverpool, told the BBC last week that it would be “stupid” for the champions to not make any additions this summer.
“There are not many that can strengthen us, but the few that are out there, we will try to get them,” Slot said.
“At this moment in time we’re not sure if that’s possible.”
