Former Zimbabwe spinner and team manager Meman dies at 73.
Following a period of poor health, former Zimbabwean off-spinner and team manager Mohammed Ahmed Meman passed away at the age of 73.
Meman, who is affectionately known in Zimbabwean cricket as Babu, had one appearance for his nation in an ODI against India in the 1987 World Cup, scoring 19 runs.
From 1977 to 1980, he also played for Shropshire in the Minor Counties Championship in England. Meman scored 888 runs, including two hundreds, and claimed 55 wickets in 32 games while playing for the county.
Meman led Zimbabwe through its early years as a Test-playing nation while managing the national team from 1992 to 2006. Later on, he made contributions as a selector.
“ZC is deeply grateful for Babu’s enduring contributions to cricket in our country, both on and off the field,” Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) said in a press release.
“His passion, humility and dedication will always be remembered by those who had the privilege of working with him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, and children – Iqbal, Fazila and Sadiya – as well as to his extended family, friends and all who knew and loved him.”
