Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma have shared the cricket field for many years, including their triumph in the 2007 T20 World Cup. Now, 17 years later, they reunite in different roles, with Rohit as captain and Gambhir as Head Coach.
Their first assignment together didn’t go as planned, as the team suffered a whitewash against Sri Lanka in the ODI series. However, they are both determined to turn things around in the current Test series against Bangladesh.
Speaking about his relationship with Rohit, Gambhir described their camaraderie as “fabulous” and noted that he’s open to any disagreements that may arise. “We’ve had several conversations. I believe that the team ultimately belongs to the captain because he leads on the field. My role, along with the support staff, is to assist the captain in every way possible. Rohit’s leadership and respect in the dressing room are crucial,” Gambhir shared.
He added, “He’s a great guy and has earned a lot of respect in that dressing room, which is the first and foremost quality of a leader. My relationship with him when we played together was fabulous. He was a great human being then, and I hope it continues that way.”
The Bangladesh series offers India a chance to boost their standing in the World Test Championship (WTC), but the visitors are in strong form after defeating Pakistan 2-0. With the important Border-Gavaskar Trophy coming up in November, Rohit has emphasized that there is “no room for complacency.” India is currently in the midst of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai.
