Gill and Jurel miss Duleep Trophy quarter-finals.
The Duleep Trophy match versus East Zone, which kicked off the 2025–26 season on August 28 at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, has been skipped by Shubman Gill.
Gill was named the North Zone team’s captain, however he is reportedly unable to play in the quarterfinals due to an illness. Before leaving for the Asia Cup, which starts in Abu Dhabi on September 9, he is anticipated to arrive in Bengaluru later this week. Services batsman Shubham Rohilla has taken Gill’s position in the squad, and Haryana top-order batsman Ankit Kumar is leading the North Zone team in his absence.
Dhruv Jurel, a batsman and wicketkeeper who was selected as the Central Zone captain for their quarterfinal matchup with the North East Zone, has also been ruled out due to a groin ache. The team is currently led by Rajat Patidar, who was formerly chosen the vice-captain. The Central XI, which faces the Northeast, includes Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, and Kuldeep Yadav.
The East Zone team also suffered a setback when usual skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran was ruled out with a fever. In the first round of the Duleep Trophy, East Zone is led by all-rounder Riyan Parag.
In his first series as captain, Gill had a spectacular tour of England, scoring 754 runs at 75.40 in five Test matches. In addition, he was selected vice-captain of the Asia Cup-bound Indian T20I team.
In addition to Gill, the North Zone team has two other players headed to the Asia Cup: Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who will play with the ball later in the match.
The BCCI’s Centre of Excellence ground will host the two semi-finals starting on September 4 and the final starting on September 11 at the same location.
