Gill ruled out for the remainder of the Kolkata Test having been taken to a hospital for further examination.
The BCCI announced on Sunday morning, prior to the commencement of the third day of the Test, that Shubman Gill, who had quit due to pain in the back of his neck on the second day of the current first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, “will take no further part in the Test match”.
“[Gill] was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play,” the BCCI statement said. “He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team.”
Gill’s ability to compete in the rest of the Eden Gardens Test had been questioned on Saturday night. After experiencing neck spasms, he was taken from the stadium on a stretcher and admitted to the hospital as “a precautionary measure” according to the BCCI at the time. He was escorted out of the stadium by the team physician and had been seen wearing a neck brace.
After unfurling a sweep to start his bat with a boundary off Simon Harmer, he felt discomfort three balls in. He held the back of his neck and called for the physiotherapist right away. As India was knocked out for 189, Gill quickly left the pitch, retired due to injury, and did not bat again.
Gill was observed by the broadcasters performing neck exercises in front of the coaching staff and a member of the medical team prior to the day’s play. He also missed a Test match against New Zealand in October 2024 because of neck pain.
When asked about Gill’s workload and involvement, India bowling coach Morne Morkel called the injury “unfortunate” and dismissed serious worries.
“Gill is a very fit guy, he looks after himself very well,” Morkel said on Saturday evening. “So, it’s just unfortunate this morning that he woke up with a stiff neck and that carried him into the day, which was crucial for us. Another sort of partnership with him batting around was going to be needed for us at the time and… just bad timing.”
