[Saba Sports News] Glenn Maxwell’s remarkable double century in the 39th game of the ICC World Cup 2023 against Afghanistan in Mumbai has been celebrated as one of the greatest ODI innings ever played. Battling through back spasms and intense cramps in his lower body, Maxwell’s extraordinary resilience led to a powerful batting display where he hit 21 fours and ten sixes, largely using his upper body, leading Australia to a thrilling victory.
Attributing his success to a Big Bash League (BBL) batting drill from about eight or nine years ago, Maxwell has mastered the art of hitting big without foot movement. On the Club Prairie Podcast, he reminisced about these drills where he would hit the first dozen balls without moving his feet to practice hitting sixes regardless of the ball’s length.
Maxwell pointed out that working on upper-body swings has helped him identify the perfect heave point. Reflecting on his innings against Afghanistan, he adapted his well-honed BBL drill to the varying deliveries he faced, relying on skills developed early in his career.
Maxwell, known for his ability to find gaps and adapt to any ball delivered, shared on the podcast how his hand-eye coordination is key. Even when faced with physical limitations, like the cramps he experienced during his century against the Netherlands, his confidence in his hands allows him to adjust and respond to different lengths effectively, a testament to his skillful and adaptive approach to batting.
