[Saba Sports News] Gujarat Titans (GT) have appointed star opening batter Shubman Gill as their new captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, following the departure of their previous skipper and ace all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who has officially been traded to Mumbai Indians (MI) on Monday.
Gill, the leading run-scorer in the last IPL edition, clinching the orange cap with an impressive 890 runs in 17 innings at an average of 59.33, including three centuries and four fifties, has been recognized by the GT management for his exceptional performance and leadership qualities.
The decision to make Gill the captain was not solely based on his batting prowess but also on his growing leadership skills, as acknowledged by Vikram Solanki, the Director of Cricket for Gujarat Titans. Solanki expressed excitement about the prospect of having Gill as the captain, citing his maturity, skill and instrumental role in the team’s success in the previous seasons.
“Shubman Gill has shown growth in stature and standing over the last two years at the highest level of the game. We’ve seen him mature not only as a batter but also as a leader in cricket. His contribution on the field has helped Gujarat Titans emerge as a formidable force, guiding the team through a successful campaign in 2022 and a strong run in 2023. His maturity and skill is evident in his on-field performance and we are extremely excited to embark on a new journey with a young leader like Shubman at the helm,” said Solanki as mentioned in the press released issued by Gujarat Titans.
Gill, on assuming the captaincy, expressed his delight and pride in leading the team. He thanked the franchise for entrusting him with the responsibility and expressed eagerness to continue the team’s success with an exciting brand of cricket.
“I am delighted and proud to assume the Captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket,” Gill stated.
The transition of leadership was not without its drama, notably during the cash trade deal between GT and MI on the retention day (Sunday). Speculations were rife for days about Pandya’s intent to join MI, even as he found himself on GT’s retained list initially. However, hours after GT retained the 30-year-old, reports confirmed Pandya’s move to MI, leading to an official announcement by both teams on Monday.
