Harshit receives reprimand and demerit point for send-off as he aggressively pointed to the dressing room after dismissing Brevis.
Harshit Rana reprimanded, handed demerit point, for Dewald Brevis send off.
In the first India vs. South Africa ODI in Ranchi on Sunday, Harshit Rana violated the ICC’s code of conduct for gesturing at Dewald Brevis after dismissing the batter. As a result, he was brought up and had a demerit point added to his disciplinary record.
Rana’s gesture “breached Article 2.5” of the code, which deals with “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter,” according to a statement released by the ICC on Wednesday, the day of the second ODI. Rana had not committed a crime in the previous 24 months.
This kind of level 1 infraction has a minimum punishment of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of the player’s match money, and one or two demerit points.
The incident took place in the 22nd over in South Africa’s chase of India’s 349, when Rana had Brevis caught at deep point by Ruturaj Gaikwad and pointed towards the direction of the dressing room rather expressively.
Brevis fell at a vital moment in the game when South Africa were 130 in the 22nd over and he was in a formidable partnership with Matthew Breetzke, who was South Africa’s top-scorer with 72.
Rana concluded with 3 for 65 after previously sending back Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton. After South Africa won the toss and inserted them, Virat Kohli led India’s batting attempt with 135 in 120 balls, his record 52nd ODI century.
Rana acknowledged to the infraction after the charge was levelled by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit.
