Alyssa Healy not retiring and rules out World Cup farewell as keeping comeback nears.
Alyssa Healy has denied that she will be throwing a goodbye party at this year’s ODI World Cup, stating that recent injuries may force her to postpone any retirement plans she may have had.
The wicketkeeper will be announced as a member of an Australia A side to play India A in Queensland in August, confirming Healy’s return to cricket on Tuesday. The captain of Australia will be playing in her first matches since the Ashes triumph earlier this year, when she missed games due to a stress fracture in her foot and failed to keep wicket in others.
She has had a challenging year in terms of her fitness, missing the T20 World Cup finals due to a foot ailment last year and having her WBBL season cut short due to a knee problem.
Due to her ailments, the 35-year-old then missed ODIs in New Zealand and the WPL in India; however, she claims that she has been well and able to play since March.
Healy has frequently joked that she considered retiring from cricket five or six times before deciding against it. She also disclosed earlier this year that she had a perfect retirement plan. That won’t be the case after the World Cup in October and November, though, as she may postpone her previously announced intentions due to her desire to play cricket while injured.
“It’s probably shifted a little bit,” Healy told AAP. “It’s made me realise that I still want to do a little bit more than maybe what I thought. At the same time, sometimes there’s stuff in life that are a little bit more important than pulling on the green and gold. So it’s just a constant reassess.
“But at the moment I definitely want to play a home summer. I want to bring the World Cup home, but also to play against India [in February-March].”
