Heather Knight set to make England return in World Cup as Kate Cross misses out due to England going for 4 spinners.
After being included in England’s squad for the World Cup, which begins next month, Heather Knight is anticipated to be healthy for the competition.
Since hurting her hamstring during England’s home series against the West Indies in May, Knight, the former captain of England, has not played; nevertheless, it is believed that her recuperation is progressing well enough for her to be selected on Wednesday.
After being ignored in the 50-over format over the English summer and making her final ODI appearance during the disastrous Ashes tour of Australia in January, Danni Wyatt-Hodge also makes a comeback to bolster the batting.
As a result, England will be playing four spinners in India and Sri Lanka, leaving out batter Maia Bouchier, all-rounder Alice Davidson-Richards, and experienced seamer Kate Cross.
Along with legspinner Sarah Glenn, who made her comeback after playing in the West Indies series but missing the subsequent India visit in June and July, Sophie Ecclestone heads the spin contingent, which also features offspinner Charlie Dean and fellow left-armer Linsey Smith.
Em Arlott, who made her international debut in May, Lauren Bell, and Lauren Filer make up England’s seam attack. After a protracted Achilles issue, Nat Sciver-Brunt is optimistic of playing bowling again in her all-rounder role.
Head Coach Charlotte Edwards said the tournament posed a “huge challenge” but she believed her side was capable of competing “with anyone”.
“Being selected to play for your country in a World Cup is one of the biggest honours in sport and I’m delighted for all the players named in the squad,” Edwards said.
“Conditions mean we have gone for the extra spinner and we’re lucky to be able to have such depth in this department, it’s fantastic to welcome Sarah Glenn back. That does mean there’s no room for Kate Cross, Maia Bouchier or Alice Davidson-Richards, which will be disappointing for them.
“It’s also great to have Danni back in the squad, she’s been in good form in domestic cricket and she’ll bring dynamism and depth to our batting, alongside Heather, who we are absolutely delighted to be able to select. She’ll be a huge asset for us.”
